MAWAN: 'PERKASA MUST STAY OUT OF SARAWAK'

KUCHING: Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) president Tan Sri William Mawan says Perkasa must stay clear of Sarawak.

Mawan gave the warning in the wake of a recent news report that Perkasa has plans to set up a chapter in Sarawak.

Perkasa is a radical Malay group made up of hardliners who are known to have been very vocal and uncompromising in their stance on Malay and Muslim rights.

Their public behaviour and antics have created unease and fear among the non-Malays and non-Muslims and could threaten national peace and harmony if left unchecked, Mawan added.

The recent call to burn the Alkitab (Bible) by Perkasa, led by its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali, rankled Christians and stoked religious tension in the nation.

Mawan is also Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president and Senior State Minister.

“Sarawak had been a happy melting pot of many ethnic groups for hundreds of years, where peace, harmony and tolerance are the State’s pride.

“Any attempt by groups from outside the state, especially those with racist and radical stance, to spread to the State and disrupt the existing harmony among the locals must be stopped from the outset,” he stressed.

Such a firm stance must be taken in the interest of the State and its people, stressed Mawan who also urged all Sarawakians from the different ethnic groups to continue to uphold tolerance and harmony in all spheres of activity as they had always done so without any problem.

Reiterating what Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had said earlier, Mawan pointed out that Sarawak had its own unique formula that was acceptable to all communities and had served as the basis for Sarawak’s success story. Hence, what has been inherited and proven to be acceptable to all in communities in Sarawak must remain status quo.

Taib made the remarks at the opening of PBB convention last month following the Court of Appeal ruling on the ban on the use of the word “ Allah” in the Catholic weekly magazine The Herald.

SDNU, an umbrella union for several Dayak-based associations, was registered on May 10 1955. Up to now SDNU alone have 103 registered branches and six pro tem branches and more than 45,000 members.

SARAWAK "BORNEONISATION": ‘Get more young people to be councillors’

MORE young people should be roped in as councillors to give them a chance to serve the community.

They can be picked from young entrepreneurs, technocrats and young professionals in the state, especially those with tertiary education.

“They will not only be given a chance to serve the community but also give their brilliant views and ideas to raise the prestige of our local councils in the eyes of the community,” opined Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi at the third session of the 17th State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

He gave his opinion during the tabling of the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill, 2013 to amend the Local Authorities (LA) Ordinance, 1996.

SARAWAK "BORNEONISATION": ‘Empower local authorities to enforce improvement’

GIVING MORE power to local authorities to manage their areas and business sites is mandatory for their improvement.

Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said this would enhance the administrators’ capability to handle and carry out development programmes.

He suggested measures such as imposing a surcharge payment for late taxpayers and increasing the penalty and compound rates.

“The activities of small and medium traders should be managed well, in line with efforts to make each town and city clean and safe with a friendly community,” he said at the tabling of the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill, 2013 at the third session of the 17th State Legislative Assembly.

‘No place for Perkasa in Sarawak’

KUCHING: Sarawak does not welcome Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa), a NGO advocating the supremacy of the Malays.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing said the ideologies of the extreme Malay organisation had no place in a multiracial society like Sarawak and that their presence would only create tensions and problems.

Masing who is also Land Development Minister and Baleh assemblyman added that it was unnecessary for Perkasa to spread to the state since there was no threat to the dignity of the Malay society.

Perkasa is a Malay organisation that upholds the rights and dignity of the Malays. However, it is not necessary for Perkasa to extend its wing here because the dignity of the local Malay community is well protected. Furthermore, the other multiracial communities in the state had no problem with their Malay counterpart.

“The Malays can stand on their own feet. They do not need people like Ibrahim Ali (Perkasa president) fight for them ,” Masing told reporters when met at the lobby of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex on the first day of sitting here yesterday.

Sarawak, Sabah not 12th and 13th states — PRS Youth

Sarawak, Sabah not 12th and 13th states — PRS Youth

KUCHING: The Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah should not be treated as the 12th and 13th states of Malaysia but two entities alongside Peninsular Malaysia.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak Youth in a recent statement supporting its president Tan Sri Dr James Masing held the view that the status of Sarawak and Sabah within Malaysia need to be reviewed from the historical perspective.

“As we all know Malaysia only existed on Sept 16, 1963 with the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak forming a new nation as equal partners.

UNITED BORNEO FRONT (UBF): Usno Baru under subversive threat

PUTATAN: Newly-registered Usno Baru or United Sabah National Organisation hit a snag when its new line-up was met with counter-claims from the party’s former protem members who claimed that they were the still members of its supreme council.

These former protem members had apparently informed the Registrar of Societies (ROS) leading to confusion.

Party insiders claimed that the ROS had warned Usno Baru officials to sort these claims immediately.
When contacted Usno Baru president  Dulli Tiaseh confirmed ROS had been in touch with him and that he had explained the matter.

“I am now awaiting ROS response. I called ROS in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 16 and stated that the correct and legal list of party supreme council is the one that the president had recently sent.

“The old list is not applicable,” said  Dulli.

Usno Baru was among the 11 new political parties from Sabah that were approved by ROS recently.

Dulli, 57, said he would issue a statement once the party receives ROS’ letter confirming the new list of supreme council of the party.

The party had taken its name from one of the oldest Sabah parties, Usno, which was disbanded years ago to pave way for Umno to set foot in Sabah, taking in almost all Usno members into Umno’s fold.

Usno Baru’s symbol of the famous Mount Kinabalu in its green and red colours scheme also has a close resemblance to the old Usno symbol.

UMNO Sabah "threaten" by USNO Baru

Sabah Umno liaison committee deputy head, Salleh Said Keruak, however had dismissed the party as irrelevant saying “Umno was not worried about or concerned over the registration of Usno Baru”. This just mere confirmation how cautious Umno with the revival of USNO Baru in Sabah.

“Sabah Umno is solid and gained landslide support from the people, winning almost all allocated state seats (for Umno), except Klias, in the recent general election,” Salleh had said. However, this all happen due to the trickery and long delayed of USNO Baru registration upcoming the election in May 2013, where USNO Baru candidate is contesting as independence, leading to confusion over the existence and aspiration of USNO Baru at that time.

Dulli had meanwhile stated Usno Baru, for the time being, would not align itself either with the ruling Barisan Nasional or the main opposition coalition of Pakatan Rakyat.

It must be remembered that USNO Baru, pending registration before GE-13 have made a pact with State Reform Party (STAR) by signing Semporna Declaration in the past. Which make it highly that USNO Baru will be aligning with United Borneo Front (UBF), fighting for Borneo Agenda.

Persatuan Kebangsaan Melayu Sarawak (PMS) upholds democracy and will reject Perkasa if need so.

Persatuan Kebangsaan Melayu Sarawak (PMS)

Kuching-based Persatuan Kebangsaan Melayu Sarawak is taking a cautious stand over Perkasa presence in Sarawak.

Its president Dr Mohamad Abas Hj Abang said “to accept or reject Perkasa was an individual’s right”.

Perkasa has every right to strengthen its wings in Sarawak as long as they don’t contradict with the Perlembagaan Persekutuan Melayu Sarawak (constitution),” he said.

So, if Perkasa don't follow Sarawakian Malay rule and way of peace and harmony as been done for more than 175 years, Perkasa will be doom
