Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement - “a political war that has the potential to come to a boil.”

KUCHING: Replicating an earlier decision in parliament, the Sarawak Legislative Assembly yesterday dismissed a motion by DAP’s Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen to discuss the state’s status within the federation of Malaysia.

Chong had moved the motion under Standing Order 15(2).

According to Chong, the “main thing in his motion is whether Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement have been eroded over this past 50 years and how we are going to address this issue.”

In dismissing the motion Speaker Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar said there was no urgency to discuss the matter and Chong’s intent “did not have the urgency” as required under the the clause.
