Rising Borneo consciousness among Swak bloggers

Sabah Star chairman Jeffrey Kitingan said the rise of political consciousness in Sarawak augured well for Borneo.

KUCHING: Over 50 bloggers here met with Sabah assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan to brainstorm over existing issues affecting the two Borneo states. Topping their discussions were the federal government’s defaults on the Malaysia Agreement and the insidious ‘amendments’ to the federal constitution and Malaya’s ‘occupation’ of Sabah and Sarawak’s natural resources. Since the historic 2008 general election and the subsequent 2011 state elections in Sarawak, political awareness has seen an increasing presence in the blogsphere.

In the run-up to last May’s general elections, Kitingan was the voice Sarawakians heard brandishing the 20 and 18 points agreements involving Sabah and Sarawak. Speaking to FMT here, Kitingan said the rise of political awareness in Sarawak especially among the younger generation was a sign of ‘emerging times’. He said the emergence of new groups such as the Sabah Sarawak Movement (SSM), Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia (SSKM), United Varsity Student of Borneo (UVSB) showed that the people of Sabah and Sarawak were desperately wanting to express their concerns.

Both SSM and SSKM are active on social media and have 7,742 and nearly 10,000 members respectively. “It’s a sign of emerging times. People are beginning to question the state’s position as the 12th and 13th state in Malaysia when this is not the reality. “That these questions are being asked indicates that we have a problem that needs to be addressed,” Kitingan said. Amendments to federal constitution He said in 1963 independent sovereigns Sabah and Sarawak went into partnership with the Federation of Malaya as equals.

“The Federation was formed through 20 points and 18 points conditions, among them were  important promises to Sabah and Sarawak that they will be self-governing. “As equal partners Sabah and Sarawak were assured that we will have the power to control our resources and finances and political franchise. “But today it is no longer that and we find ourselves (Sabah and Sarawak) degraded to be just be one of state. “It has been a project takeover for Malaya,” said Kitingan. He pointed out that the federal constitution had been surreptitiously amended “around 1975 and 1976” to “totally change the concept of Malaysia”.

“The amendments turned Sabah and Sarawak into the 12th and 13th state. It was a takeover of  British colonies. “And now we are colonized by Malaya especially Sabah,” he said adding that Sarawak had managed to preserve its independence to some extend because of Chief Minister Taib Mahmud. Senior leaders in the Taib-run administration have in recent months also openly accused the Umno-led federal authorities of shortchanging Borneo and have gone as far as to call for a review of the current situation.

Meanwhile Taib’s firm stand on the ‘status quo’ of the Malaysia Agreement and the state government’s endorsement of Sarawak’s Independence Day on July 23 last year augurs well for Borneo sentiments.

Umno young guns straining ties between Putrajaya and Sarawak, says James Masing

Sarawak's outspoken Land Development Minister, Tan Sri Dr James Masing, has accused young federal leaders, particularly those from Umno, of causing friction between Putrajaya and the state government.
He said their lack of understanding of the Malaysia Agreement and how the federation was formed, makes them think that they are the masters and leaders from Sarawak and Sabah should be subservient to them.
Without wanting to name names, Masing, a senior minister in Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's Cabinet, said in state capital Kuching that these young Umno leaders should be humble enough “to pick up the history book and relearn the history of Malaysia”.
“They should be reminded of the understanding for the formation of Malaysia, the agreements that were signed, the position of Sarawak and Sabah in the federation and the special rights and autonomy we have.
“When they talk to us, they make themselves feel as if they are superior while we in Sarawak, are their coolies.
“Personally, I get irritated with those leaders who do not treat us from Sarawak as equal partners in the administration of this federation,” he said yesterday.
Masing also said he gets upset with Umno leaders asking him questions like: “Oh! When did you leave Malaysia?” when in Kuala Lumpur or Putrajaya to attend meetings.
“I told them I never left Malaysia. I only just flew in from Kuching. It maybe small talk but it showed their thinking.
“We in Sarawak and Sabah seemed to be like an appendix to West Malaysia."
“There are only four signatories to the formation of Malaysia – Malaya, representing the 11 Straits Settlements and Malay states, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah (then known as British North Borneo).
“Not 11, 12 or 15 signatories. Only four. Sarawak and Sabah are regional entities of their own and we should be regarded and treated like one," he pointed out.
Masing said unless and until these young leaders understand all these historical facts and start respecting the agreement, there will always be friction between Putrajaya and the state particularly when federal policies do not take into account Sarawak and Sabah's special position.
Issues that are currently straining state-federal ties, Masing said, is the Home Ministry's decision to ban the use of the word "Allah" in Christian publications, a decision which the Court of Appeal upheld in a controversial ruling last month.
The decision had fanned the anger of the 1.6 million Christians in East Malaysia against Putrajaya as it was seen by people in the two states as breaching the very first point of the terms Sabah and Sarawak drew up when Malaysia was formed.
“How could they then say the ruling is applicable only in West Malaysia and not in East Malaysia? How could we have two sets of rule for one country?
“Then you get an Umno minister saying that if East Malaysians were to come to the peninsula, they have to respect the laws of the peninsula as West Malaysians are not used to Christians using Allah,” he said in reference to Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz who recently warned East Malaysian Christians that they cannot use the word in Peninsular Malaysia.
“That's arrogance."
Sarawak's autonomy over immigration, which places curbs and restrictions on people from the peninsula from coming into the state freely and to work, is another matter that has also been continually questioned by members of parliament.
Masing said BN leaders, whether they are from the peninsula, Sabah or Sarawak, “must discuss issues intelligently, with great sensitivity and as equal partners and not as boss and subordinate”.
“Arrogance must not come into the picture. There must be a spirit of understanding.
“If our federal leaders are not mindful of the Malaysian Agreement, then the fears voiced by one of our Malaysia founding fathers, Tun Jugah Barieng, might ring true,” Masing said.
Jugah, the paramount chief of the Ibans, voiced loudly his scepticism and doubts of sincerity on Sarawak's long-term position in Malaysia when he famously said: “Anang Malaysia sebaka tebu, manis di pohon, tawal dihujung” (Malaysia should not be like the sugar cane, sweet at the head and getting less sweet towards the end).
“That would be most unfortunate,” he added.
Masing said his criticism was not to demand a review of the Malaysia Agreement but a demand that federal leaders be reminded of the terms and agreements in the formation of Malaysia and start respecting them.
The friction, he noted, could jeopadise the chances of the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming state election. The mandate of the Sarawak government ends in 2016.
“I hope the federal leaders take this as a constructive criticism as I want the BN to administer this nation for years to come.”
Parliament last Wednesday rejected an emergency motion tabled by Darell Leiking (PKR - Penampang) for a special committee to review the 18 and 20-point agreements.
Deputy speaker Ismail Mohamed said although the motion is definite and of public interest, he still rejected it on the grounds it was not urgent. - November 17, 2013.

Masing wants review on state’s position in Malaysian federation

KUCHING: Sarawak’s position in the Malaysian federation should be reviewed from the historical aspect, says Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing.

He said unless the issue was addressed urgently, the BN might have to fight an uphill battle in the next state election scheduled in 2016 and the parliamentary elections scheduled in 2018.

“Is Sarawak one of the 14 states or one of the four regions which signed the Malaysia Agreement.

“If the federal leaders cannot answer this question, the people of Sarawak will continue to be left out in terms of development funds,” Masing told The Borneo Post at his residence here yesterday.

On another issue, Masing who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president was still sore about his party’s poor representation in the Federal Cabinet.

“I am a bit disappointed that parties apart from PBB have been neglected in terms of portfolios and in terms of appointment. And also not only in terms of numbers but the portfolios that is important to Sarawak and Sabah,” said Masing.

Currently PBB which won 14 seats in the last general election has four full ministers and two deputy ministers.

Masing said it would only be sensible that in the upcoming Federal Cabinet reshuffle, MPs from PRS and other BN component parties such as Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) should be included.

Currently, only PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu is in the Federal Cabinet as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

The party’s other appointment was given to its vice-president Datuk Joseph Salang but he turned it down. Salang was subsequently appointed chairman of 1Malaysia Sarawak Advisory Council recently.

Masing also implied that if Malaysia Chinese Association (MCA) could not make up its mind whether to take up the slot of Transport Minister, it should be given to other BN component parties.

This he said was because MCA fared badly in the last 13th general election, winning just seven seats out of 37 seats it contested.

“PRS contested in six seats and we won all of them. To govern a country, it’s not just about how many seats you have (won out of the number of seats you contested) but also how your party has performed during elections,” he reiterated.

As such, Masing saw no reason why the slot of the Transport Minister could not be allocated to PRS. Currently, Transport Minister is being held by Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, who is also the Minister of Defence.

Masing was commenting on Star’s Sabah chief Datuk Dr Jeffery Kitingan that both PRS and SPDP should be daring enough to ask for better representation in the Federal Cabinet as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had indicated that there would be a cabinet reshuffle after MCA’s annual general meeting next month.

Agenda Borneo Memartabatkan Maruah Negara Sabah

Maka, mari kita bersama-sama menyambut hari Kemerdekaan kita. Kemerdekaan Negara Sabah (North Borneo) kerana kita sekali Merdeka, selamanya MERDEKA!

Salam Hormat,

STAR candidate wants July 22 public holiday

KUCHING: State Reform Party (STAR) Stampin candidate Lina Soo wants July 22 to be declared as Sarawak Independence Day and a public holiday in place of Aug 31.

Soo explained that Sarawak gained its independence from the British on July 22, 1963 and not Aug 31, which is when Malaya gained independence in 1957.

In a press statement yesterday, Soo said Sarawakians have been celebrating Malaya’s independence day every year on Aug 31 and ignoring our own history.

“Neither did Malaysia give us independence as we were an independent and sovereign nation before we formed the Federation of Malaysia with Singapore, Sabah and Malaya on Sept 16, 1963,” said Soo.

She pointed out that July 22 saw Sarawak having its first Chief Minister — the late Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan.

“We also had our Sarawak Constitution 1941, our Sarawak flag, our Sarawak anthem ‘Fair Land Sarawak’, and our own stamps,” said Soo.

She added that Sarawak cannot continue to be subservient to Malaya by celebrating Malaya’s independence day and hiding Sarawak’s own history.

“Fifty years and not 55 years is the number of years of our independence. It is now time to put history right by telling the whole truth to the people of Sarawak,” she stressed

Petronas finds new gas deposits in SARAWAK

In a statement by Petronas on 31 October 2013, it said the first discovery was via the Pegaga-1 well in Block SK320, offshore Sarawak, which is operated by Mubadala Petroleum through a Malaysian affiliate.

The Pegaga-1 well is located about 250 km northwest of Bintulu, in a water depth of 108 meters.

"The operator plans to conduct further drilling to determine the volume of the discovery and the gas quality," the company said.

Its unit, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd has a 25% interest in the block.

The discovery in Block SK320 proved that there was still hydrocarbon potential in the Sarawak Basin, Petronas said.

The company, together with its production sharing contractors, is actively exploring in the basin through exploration drillings, both in the shallow and deep water areas, as well as acquiring new seismic, electromagnetic and gravity data to unlock the undiscovered potential of the areas.

Several oil and gas multinationals have been successful in their recent exploration drilling in Sarawak with several notable discoveries such as NC3/NC8, B14, Tukau Timur Deep, Kuang North and Kasawari.

Allah decision is a breach of Malaysia agreement - DATUK DR. JEFFREY KITINGAN

Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan is the Chairman of STAR Sabah and State Assemblymen for N33, Bingkor, Sabah.
He also contested in P180, Keningau and garnering 11900 strong votes

As the debate over the Allah decision rages, politicians from East Malaysia argued that the controversial Court of Appeal ruling is a breach of the Malaysia agreement.

Constitutional lawyers also weighed in on the issue, saying it was a clear case of a breach of the 1963 Malaysia agreement if East Malaysian Christians are barred from using the word Allah in any part of the federation.

Sabah State Reform Party (Star) chairman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the Court of Appeal ruling went against the first point of the agreement which touched on freedom of religion.

Point 1 of the 20-point condition that Sabah drew up and the 18-point condition Sarawak drew up, which Malaya had to agree to before forming Malaysia, stated that: “While there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia, there should be no state religion in Borneo (Sarawak & Sabah), and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to Borneo.”

Kitingan, a vocal proponent of restoring the full autonomy and rights of Sabah and Sarawak under the 20 and 18-point agreements, also pointed out that the country's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, had given a clear assurance on religious freedom in Parliament on October 16, 1961.

He then quoted Tunku: “One reaction in the Borneo territories was that the Malaysia concept was an attempt to colonise the Borneo territories ... the answer to this was, as I said before, it is legally impossible for the federation to colonise because we desire that they should join us in the federation in equal partnership, enjoying the same status between one another, so there is no fear that Malaysia will mean that there will be an imposition of Islam on Borneo ... so everybody is free to practise whatever religion.”

Kitingan said Sabah natives marked the assurance of religious freedom in the Malaysia agreement by literally carving it in stone, the Batu Sumpah or Oath Stone.

“It essentially states that as long as this religious freedom is respected, we shall be loyal to Malaysia,” added Kitingan, who in 2010 founded the United Borneo Front (UBF), a non-governmental organisation aimed at safeguarding the rights of Sabah and Sarawak in the 20-point and 18-point agreements.

Echoing Kitingan's view that the Court of Appeal ruling had breached the agreement was Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian.

“This decision is a betrayal of the undertaking given to our forefathers when they agreed to join in the formation of Malaysia,” Baru said.

“The rights of Sarawakians and Sabahans were also protected in the Government Paper 'Malaysia and Sarawak' dated January 4, 1962.”

Spekulasi ancaman "Melayu Baru" - MANIPULASI POLITIK PERKAUMAN

Sehingga PRU13 N32 Tambunan hanya SATU DUN saja.

POSIK!

Ulasan Bajet 2014 Daripada Perspektif Anak Muda Negara Sabah - UVSB

Hasmin Azroy Abdullah

Soul 2 Soul 2.0 - RELIGIOUS HARMONY IN SARAWAK

It was a show of religious harmony by Christians and Muslims in Sarawak yesterday even as the debate over the October 14 court ruling on the word Allah raged on.

The Borneo Post reported that non-governmental organizations Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak and the Islamic Information Centre organized a forum called “Tweeting Up Unity: Social Cohesion Through Social Media”, under the Soul2Soul 2.0 interfaith forum series, at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre in Kuching.

The event's keynote speaker was social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, who was also a panelist. It was attended by over 200 youths from higher learning institutions and government agencies.

State Youth Development assistant minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hailed the event as "a shining example of Sarawak's religious harmony".

SARAWAK: THE REAL DEAL

SARAWAK: THE REAL DEAL

A summary

This book is about defending the inalienable right of our peoples to self-determination, national identity, territorial integrity, our truth, our seas, our skies and our sovereignty. It is dedicated to our young sons and daughters of Sarawak; and also to our compatriots who had sacrificed much to defend our homeland from foreign rule

It is the story of the betrayal of the independent kingdom of Sarawak - through trickery, coercion and subterfuge - to become part of a larger whole a.k.a. Malaysia.

Sarawak sovereignty was won, and lost three times: from genesis on 24 September 1841 to Japanese occupation in 1942, British colonial rule in 1946 and finally, incorporation as the 13th state of Malaya under the guise of “independence within Malaysia” on 16 September 1963.

The book uncovers many facts on Sarawak previously unknown, conveniently forgotten or simply, hidden. Much of the accounts are sourced from valuable reports compiled from official sources such as Council Negri proceedings and ‘Sarawak by the Week’ gazette by Ho Ah Chon who deserves the title of ‘Sarawak Chronicler’. To top it, the declassified British documents connect the dots to reveal the sinister truth behind the formation of Malaysia.

Prior to British colonization Sarawak had a history of 100 years of independence and sovereign rule. During WWII Rajah Vyner Brooke had already spurned Britain’s proposal of the Malayan Union plan to merge Malaya and Singapore with British Borneo into one colonial administration. After the surrender of the Japanese, the British government succeeded in twisting Brooke's arm to cede Sarawak to make it a Crown colony on 1 July 1946.

The UN Decolonization Declaration under Resolution 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960 necessitated the British to revive their Malayan Union plan to perpetuate their strategic and economic interests in the region; it was fact the process of decolonization by imperial powers in their sunset years had become a process of manipulating local allies into power and controlling the newly independent states; or incorporate territories under a federal system controlled by friendly, often repressive regimes.

The announcement by Tunku that Britain and Malaya had proposed to incorporate the three British Borneo states into the federated states of Malaya under his Greater Malaysia Plan to make it fourteen, touched off widespread protest and opposition.

The most damaging piece of evidence from the declassified documents reveal Malaysia was already pre-determined - in secret discussions between McMillan and Tunku in London - to surrender the sovereignty of British Borneo to Malaya.

Nevertheless, Britain and Malaya had to go through the motions in the making of Malaysia, by employing the stratagems of the Cobbold Commission, the Inter-Governmental Report and the United Nations Assessment to appease the Borneons, the British public and the international community. The communist bogeyman was also demonized and hunted down to ‘crush’ anti-colonial and anti-Malaysia sentiments to ensure that nothing, but nothing would stand in the way of British/Malaya plot to take Sarawak to the slaugher-house.

Lina Soo is a candidate for State Reform Party (STAR) for P196 Stampin, Sarawak in GE-13
For Sarawak it was a clash of history.

In his parting message to the people the Rajah in 1946, had expressly affirmed on behalf of the British government that Sarawak would not form part of the Malayan Union, and that Britain would eventually restore Sarawak sovereignty according to Clause 7 of the Nine Cardinal Principles in the preamble to the 1941 Sarawak Constitution: “The people of Sarawak shall be entrusted in due course with the governance of themselves, and that continuous efforts shall be made to hasten the reaching of this goal by educating them in the obligations, the responsibilities, and the privileges of citizenship”.

Britain had breached its oaths by its actions to convert its British Borneo colony into a Malaya colony, and denying the peoples their inalienable right to self-determination by failing to restore their territorial sovereignty and people sovereignty. In the process Britain in concert with foreign influences and interferences, took armed action and repressive measures to rob Sarawakians of their right to peacefully and rightfully assert their right to complete independence. All this was a gross violation of UN Decolonization protocol, despite strong protests from Indonesia, Philippines, Russia and Pakistan who in the main, denounced the Malaysia Plan as a neo-colonialist plot.

Britain had not granted British Borneo independence first, nor did Britain ever had the intent to hold a referendum for Sarawak because, as Tunku had said, “the people would not understand”.

The Malaysia Agreement was inked on 9 July 1963 (Sarawak representatives had no mandate to present themselves as the government, but that is another story) and on 26 July, the Malaysia Bill was pushed through the House of Lords in the British Parliament to form the Federation of Malaysia on 31 August 1963, a date deliberately chosen by Tunku to match Malaya independence day.

Malaysia came into being on 16 September 1963, instead of 31 August, the delay being to accommodate Indonesia and Philippines demand for a plebiscite for Sarawak and North Borneo, which was met by a phoney “UN Assessment” to avoid a referendum and to legitimise Malaysia in the eyes of the world.

For Sarawak once a proud and independent kingdom, the sweetheart deal conjured between Britain and Malaya in the formation of the Federation of Malaysia had transformed into the “RAW DEAL” for Sarawak.

Up to today, the belief in the intrinsic right to self-determination and, freedom of the people to decide the destiny of their country has not been extinguished, and is still beating in the hearts of many Sarawakians. But, will this cry in the wilderness be heard? Is it 50 years too late?
