(To be shared among Sarawakians)
Do you think the current Sarawak state government will gazette July 22 as a public holiday?
I personally think there is a very fat chance for the day Sarawak achieved its independence in 1963 will be an official holiday in the state. Most likely, priorities would always be given in August 31, a date that has no significance to the Sarawak history, and September 16, a black day in our history.
How can we observe the annual anniversary of our independence? It will almost be a certain working day. How can we work on when we are supposed to celebrate, and have day offs on an insignificant date as well as on a day we do not want to remember?
I do think though, we can indeed have a public holiday on July 22 every year. But how?
The resistance against unjust authorities always requires personal choices and sacrifices. We can have a public holiday on July 22, on our own picking and upon our own sacrifice. We can observe the day every year, but taking a one-day leave from work, and if we have a business, we can close it down for the day. Like I said, we can choose to take a one-day leave, sacrificing just one day of your entitled days off from work, to observe July 22.
On the day, you can just stay at home, or even better, organize/join independence celebrations with fellow Sarawakians. Just rejoice, choose to use just one day from your leave for the big day.
Let us show to the state government, and also to the "Other Side", that we still can celebrate our independence anniversary every year, even if it is not a public holiday. Stay home on July 22, spend time with your family, or join in the celebrations! Make a choice! Make a sacrifice!
MAKE JULY 22 A PUBLIC HOLIDAY OURSELVES!
MAKE JULY 22 OUR OWN PUBLIC HOLIDAY!
