FROM THE TENGKU - A SCRAWLED PROMISE ON AN OLD ENVELOPE
Singapore Straits Times dd 10 July 1963

London, An old envelope on which has been scrawled a promise involving millions of dollars and bearing the signature of Tengku Abdul Rahman.

In the last minute negotiations, Britain agreed to hand over Blakang Mati, golfcourse at Tanglin Barracks, Fort Canning and still outstanding $15million which Mr Lee wanted for the development of the foreshore lands. Mr Lee insisted he would not initial the document without a satisfactory settlement of the $15million claim.

After lengthy negotiations Mr Lee was handed an envelope in which the Tengku had written out his promise and appended his signature.

" This was $5million less than we wanted but I settled for the sake of the Tengku", said Mr Lee.

He said: "The Tengku persuaded the son of a poor Chinese peasant to give up $5 million on the assurance that all will be all".

Admin. All said, everything turned out well for LKY and Singapore. What about SS?

Pic. The Tengku signs the agreement. Looking on is Mr Sandys.
