pix is Ismail Abdullah, a sukarelawan, me and Salleh's son. in limbang. Ismail did did not take part in the battle but helped to kumpul the mayat (10) at the old masjid behind the polis station. he helped me to understand the difference between an uprising, a rebellion, a battle, i am learning everyday.
Salleh Sambas is a local hero. he gave up public service in the British colonial administration to eke out a living as a rubber tapper rather than help the british to repress the people. after he was imprisoned, his family was so poor some of them did not get any education.
Salleh lay down not only his own life, he sacrficed his family too. pix is Salleh's son who never went to school. another hero is Khamseh also from lawas, khamseh is admired for his bravery to resist the British colonists, his son was the STAR candidate in the last state election, seems nationalism and opposition to foreign rule runs in the family. we salute our limbang/lawas nationalists and appreciate their sacrifices. In a war, there has to be a winner and a loser.
